The Vermilion YMCA Torpedoes

The Principles of YMCA serve as the foundation of the team's approach toward competitive swimming which leads to self-confidence, understanding the value of hard work, the importance of health, self-respect, respect for others, and good sportsmanship.

The Vermilion YMCA Torpedo swim team participates in both YMCA Meets in the North East Ohio YMCA League, as well as USA Swimming Meets in the Lake Erie District.

Join one of the best YMCA swim teams in northeast Ohio – ranked #1 in 2006 and 2007! This competitive program is designed to develop skills necessary to compete within the Northeast Ohio Swim League. Swimmers practice up to four nights weekly and will participate in up to eight meets throughout the season. Meets are held throughout northeast Ohio YMCAs. Parents are encouraged to volunteer at meets and other events throughout the season for team success! Parents may also join the Torpedoes Swim Parent Advisory Group.

Team Code of Conduct

"As a Torpedo team athlete and parent, I recognize and agree to follow this Code of Conduct at all times while  representing the Vermilion YMCA Torpedo Swim Team."

At practice & Swim meets I will:

  • Be on time and have my children prepared for all practices and swim meets.
  • Assist in setup / tear down of pool equipment at practice and home meets.  And help whenever and wherever I can.
  • Respect all lifeguards, coaches, swimmers, officials, YMCA Staff, Splash Zone Staff, and visitors at all times.
  • Ask questions when I am not sure of coach’s instructions or what is going on.
  • Act and conduct myself with dignity and with respect for others and their property.
  • Assist other team members or parents when they appear lost or confused.
  • Cheer for all teammates during races not just my close friends or my children.
  • Offer congratulations to my opponents & teammates - win or lose.
  • Be humble in victory and courageous in defeat.
  • Always teach and practice good sportsmanship.
  • Strive to do MY best and encourage all team members to do the same.
  • Deal justly, kindly, impartially, and intelligently with all of my fellow teammates and parents.
  • Encourage and practice values such as respect, caring, honesty, courage, and patience.

At practice & swim meets I will NOT:

  • Cause physical harm or threaten physical harm to a fellow or opposing team member, coach, parent or officials.
  • Possess, use or be under the influence of alcoholic beverages, chemicals, or illegal drugs.
  • Behave in a manner that, in the opinion of the coach, team representative, and/or YMCA Staff is contrary to the team code of conduct, the Y philosophy, or normally accepted behavior.
  • I understand that violating any of these guidelines may cause disciplinary action, such as suspension or removal from practice, meets, or the team. I understand that the values contained in the Code of Conduct remain in effect for as long as I am a member of the Vermilion YMCA Torpedo Swim Team.

Specific Swim Team Rules

  • At no time will any swimmer be allowed to be in bare feet at any place in the Splash Zone or any YMCA unless in the pool or in the Locker Rooms.
  • Swimmer will not be permitted in the bleachers during meets at any time.  All swimmers will be on deck until their event is on call.  Any swimmer wishing to watch the meet can find a place on the side of the pool.
  • The only place food can be eaten during swim meets will be in the concession area.  Absolutely no food or candy will be permitted on the pool deck or in locker rooms.
  • Swimmers and parents will adhere to all Splash Zone rules that are posted on the Splash Zone website or posted at the Splash Zone.
  • All swimmers and parents will be expected to adhere to the code of conduct.  Please read it completely, and be aware of what is expected of all our swim team members.
  • No parent at any time is to interrupt a practice.  And at no time is any parent allowed to come out on deck when practice is ongoing.  The only exception to this rule will be in case of an emergency.  Please relay any messages that the coach needs to know (e.g., leaving early or special instructions) through your swimmer.
  • Any and all swim team problems will be brought to coach Dave ONLY.  He can be reached at:  gtdaver2002@yahoo.com, or dave.richards@health-partners.org, or his Cell phone 216-224-7424.

These rules have been written up by Coach Dave and approved by the Splash Zone and the Vermilion YMCA.  There is no room for question on any of them.  Any rules not followed will be handled on an individual basis and will receive consequences…

HOW A DUAL MEET FOR YMCA WORKS...

There are 10 "Age groups" that Score:

  • 8 and Under Boys/Girls
  • 10 and Under Boys/Girls
  • 11-12 Boys/Girls
  • 13-14 Boys/Girls
  • 15 and over Boys/Girls

There are 11 categories of points to win:

  • 10 and under (which include all 8 and under individual swims) Boys/Girls,
  • 11-12 Boys/Girls,
  • 13-14 Boys/Girls,
  • 15 and over Boys/Girls,
  • Total Boys/Girls,
  • Total Team

Often times you might hear that we won 7-4 or 8-3...   It is possible to tie an age group and in those cases it would score 7.5 - 3.5 or 6.5 - 4.5

In highly competitive and close meets, the only real concern is usually "Total Team points"...  Since that is the last point to win its usually the deciding factor...  Close meets are always decided by 6-5...  with the final point to win (6) always being "Total Team points"...

Individual events Score as:

  • First Place = 5
  • Second Place = 3
  • Third Place = 2
  • Forth Place = 1

Relay Events Score as:

  • First place = 8
  • Second Place = 4
  • Third Place = 2

All scoring swimmers swim in the first heat of an event...   Home teams are in lanes 2,4,6 and visiting team are in 1,3,5

All 8 and under relays do NOT score in our league for dual meets, (but they do score at Divisionals and League championship meets).... 8 and under individual events always score and those points roll up under the 10 and under age group... there is no 8 and under age group to win... it is only 10 and under, even though 8 year old swim and score in separate events like 25 free, 25 back, 50 free, 25 fly and 25 Breast...

The only swimmers that a coach can move up for relays are 8 and under for 10 and under events and relays...
